Post-Ronaldo Real Madrid gets 1st test in UEFA Super Cup

Aug 14, 2018

TALLINN, Estonia — The shadow of Cristiano Ronaldo is still hanging over Real Madrid as the team prepares to face fierce rival Atletico Madrid in the UEFA Super Cup final on Wednesday. Captain Sergio Ramos, though, has no doubt that the club can deal with the departure of the five-time Ballon d'Or winner, who joined Juventus in a 112-million euro ($131-million) deal after the World Cup. "We've lost a very important and influential player, but that doesn't mean we're going to stop winning," he said. "Other big players at Real Madrid have come and gone. The club rises above all...

Here is the pick of the signings so far: CRISTIANO RONALDO (Juventus) In the "swoop of the century," Cristiano Ronaldo moved from Real Madrid to Juventus in a Serie A record 112 million euro ($131.5 million) deal. Some see it as an extravagant sum for a player who, although a five-time Ballon d'Or winner, is entering the latter stages of his career. Ronaldo has always been credited with a phenomenal work ethic, and the 33-year-old Portugal forward has promised to...

Ronaldo makes Juventus fans wait only 8 minutes for 1st goal

Aug 14, 2018

VILLAR PEROSA, Italy — Cristiano Ronaldo made Juventus fans wait only eight minutes before scoring his first goal for the club in a traditional pre-season friendly against the team's "B'' side on Sunday. Ronaldo finished with his usual confidence and poise after latching onto a looping pass over the midfield from attacking midfelder Federico Bernardeschi. Ronaldo took one touch to cushion the ball and then casually thumped it into the left corner. Ten minutes later, he pressured Riccardo Capellini into an own-goal to make it 2-0 to the Bianconero, the name given to Juventus because of its famed white-and-black jersey....
