Daniel Halperin, PhD releases his groundbreaking book, “Facing COVID Without Panic: 12 Common Myths and 12 Lesser Known Facts About the Pandemic – Clearly Explained by an Epidemiologist”

In early June of 2020, while finalizing a scientific article for a respected public health journal, some colleagues urged Daniel to prepare a more accessible version suitable for a wider audience. In particular, many people seem anxious and uncertain about which measures will best protect themselves from the coronavirus (and which ones may be unnecessary). To shed light on these questions, he eventually agreed with his colleagues’ suggestion, and this concise book is the result.

During a recent interview, Dr. Halperin commented, “This review of the existing and yes, ever-changing, evidence attempts to synthesize and present the best available data – and apparent myths – regarding the novel coronavirus and the global pandemic it has unleashed. All of us understandably are fearful or at least seriously concerned. When asked how this rigorous yet somewhat “alternative” analysis has affected his own life, Halperin mentioned: “Well, I have been reassuring my previously energetic 91-year-old mother in California and my 88-year-old mother-in-law in Madrid that they can, and indeed should, resume enjoying daily walks and (with care) socializing.”

He went on to explain, based on a rigorous analysis of the available scientific evidence, the need to “strategically prioritize how best to prevent severe illness and death than to continue our overwhelming focus on attempting to somehow stamp out all new Covid-19 infections.”

Daniel Halperin, Ph.D. is Adjunct Full Professor at the University of North Carolina Gillings School of Global Public Health in Chapel Hill. He has conducted epidemiological and anthropological research for over forty years in Latin America, sub-Saharan Africa, and other regions, and previously taught at Harvard School of Public Health, the University of California at Berkeley, and the Ponce School of Medicine in Puerto Rico.
