Posey International has released a new guide on intermodal trucking for shippers, explaining when combining rail and truck transportation can make sense on longer lanes and how coordinated customs clearance and drayage can help limit avoidable port-related charges.
Houston, United States, October 22, 2026 /NewsNetwork/ -- In the new resource, Houston freight forwarder Posey International explains how intermodal trucking combines rail and truck transportation for long-haul freight, where the model can make sense compared with traditional truckload, and why importers moving containers through Port Houston need customs clearance and drayage schedules to work together.

Intermodal remains a significant part of U.S. freight movement, with railroads reporting more than 11 million intermodal units through the first 39 weeks of 2026, up 4.2% from the same period a year earlier, according to the Association of American Railroads. For shippers, however, the value of the model depends less on simply choosing rail and more on whether each transfer between modes is timed correctly. Posey International’s guide addresses that coordination challenge by showing where intermodal can work well and where poor timing can create added cost.
According to the guide, intermodal generally becomes more attractive on longer, predictable lanes where the additional transit time associated with rail is acceptable. Freight remains sealed in the same container while short drayage moves connect the origin and destination with the longer rail leg, reducing handling while taking advantage of rail efficiency.
The economics can change quickly when those handoffs are poorly coordinated, though the guide notes. Beyond the rail rate, shippers may encounter chassis fees, per diem, demurrage, and detention. As Posey explains, “the extras are where budgets slip,” particularly when a container reaches a terminal before paperwork or pickup arrangements are ready.
For Houston importers, customs clearance adds another timing dependency since containers cannot leave the terminal until U.S. Customs and Border Protection releases the shipment, meaning delays can consume available free time while storage-related charges accumulate. As such, Posey stresses that “the customs side and the trucking side need to talk” so dispatch can be aligned with release rather than handled as a separate step.
