Direct Teeth Whitening Addresses DIY Whitening Risks During National Dental Hygiene Month

The retailer highlights dental checks and product-specific instructions rather than improvised social-media whitening routines

London, United Kingdom, October 19, 2026 -- Direct Teeth Whitening is highlighting responsible-use advice on DIY teeth whitening during October's National Dental Hygiene Month, a US observance organised by the American Dental Hygienists' Association.

In an August 2020 BBC News report, the British Dental Association warned that unsupervised use of higher-concentration whitening products could damage teeth and gums.

Customers should have their teeth and gums checked before whitening, particularly where there is sensitivity, decay, gum problems or restorations such as crowns, veneers or fillings. Whitening is not a substitute for addressing underlying dental problems, and a dentist should be consulted before starting a course of treatment. Direct Teeth Whitening provides product-specific instructions for its whitening range.

Customers are advised not to increase the amount of gel applied or extend treatment time if results seem slower than expected, as results vary between individuals. Stocked product lines include Philips Zoom and Crest, each with instructions specific to that product.

Anyone experiencing severe or persistent sensitivity, significant gum irritation, swelling, ongoing pain or any other reaction that causes concern should stop treatment and seek professional advice. The NHS recommends that teeth and gums are checked before whitening and describes whitening kits supplied by a dentist, or treatment carried out at a dental surgery, as the safest options for teeth whitening.

"Our advice is simple: follow the instructions for your specific product and speak to a dentist if you have any concerns," said Jason Anthony, Manager at Direct Teeth Whitening. "That applies whether you're using our own gel or one of the ranges we stock."

Direct Teeth Whitening is an online retailer of teeth whitening and oral-care products serving UK customers.
